NY Aspergers Teen Tour

New York Quirky Kids Travel Program

New York Aspergers Teen TourIf you live in the New York area – including New York City, New Jersey and Connecticut – and have a child or teenager with Asperger’s Syndrome or with high functioning autism spectrum disorder, you know how important it is for him or her to be independent and to make social connections. While there are programs for quirky kids in New York, the best way to help your Aspie or ASD child prepare for life after high school is to give him or her the experience of going away from home and practicing life skills in a real world setting. That’s the goal of Beyond Akeela New York Aspergers Teen Tour which helps New York quirky kids build the confidence, executive functioning skills, independence and social skills they’ll need to be successful in college or in their first job.

Quirky Kids Life Skills Program

Quirky kids leaving the New York area to travel with peers, live in dorms, cook for themselves, do their laundry and have a hand in planning their own itinerary is a life-changing opportunity for teenagers on the spectrum. They’ll look into a variety of post-secondary options – including gap year programs and taking tours of colleges and universities – conduct mock job interviews, discuss employment options, and even experience community service projects. When adolescents return home from Beyond Akeela to the New York area to become graduating high school seniors with Asperger’s or a high functioning autism spectrum disorder, parents will notice tremendous changes in them. Parents tell us all the time that their kids are anxious and that this anxiety keeps them from challenging themselves to leave their comfort zone. After completing this life skills summer support program, teens with Asperger’s will be less anxious and more prepared to face the transition from high school to whatever comes next for them: gap year, college or a first job.
